The
Peak District National Park lies between the cities of Manchester and Sheffield at the southern end of the Pennine hills.
Underneath the northern end of the Peak District lies a hard sandstone, known as Millstone Grit. As the name suggests, this was once cut and formed into large millstones used for, amongst other things, grinding cereal into flour.
In contrast, the southern end has limestone underneath. This is quarried and used extensively in construction, in particular for making cement.
